Now, a new machine has appeared that transforms the classic accessory into something much closer to a full-fledged camera.

According to a report published by TechEBlog on July 30, 2026, Crissa Graves has developed a new prototype called the GBD-M2. Although it is based on the Game Boy Pocket, the device has been redesigned to resemble a compact digital camera.

Graves has also shared footage showing the GBD-M2 in action and says that the files needed to build one will eventually be released once the project reaches a sufficiently polished stage.

Video of Camera GBD-M2 in actionOnce I’ve reached a comfortable place with the project, I plan on sharing the files to build yourself
— Game Boy Camera (@gameboycamera.com) 2026-07-28T23:20:11.740Z

The Original Game Boy CPU and RAM Have Been Transplanted onto a New PCB

What makes the GBD-M2 particularly interesting is that it is much more than a Game Boy Pocket housed inside a camera-shaped shell.

According to TechEBlog, Graves’ earlier Camera M-series projects required modifications to an existing Game Boy Pocket, along with a custom-built power system.

For the GBD-M2, however, the original Game Boy CPU and RAM have been transplanted onto a newly designed circuit board. The button layout has also been rearranged to make the device easier to operate as a camera, resulting in a more refined design than the previous prototypes.

Dedicated Shutter Button and an IPS Display

The GBD-M2 features a dedicated shutter button positioned where it can be pressed comfortably while using the device as a camera.

Its screen has also been upgraded to a backlit IPS display. Improved visibility outdoors is an especially important feature for a device designed to be carried around and used for photography.

The power system has been modernized as well. One configuration uses a rechargeable LiPo battery with USB Type-C charging, while another supports replaceable AA batteries.

The Game Boy link port has also been retained, allowing users to print their photographs with a Game Boy Printer—just as they could with the original accessory in the late 1990s.

Detachable Camera Module with CS-Mount Lens Support

One of the GBD-M2’s most notable features is its removable camera module.

By attaching a specially designed CS-mount module, users can fit the camera with interchangeable lenses.

The original Game Boy Camera cartridge can also be attached, while the module can be replaced with a regular Game Boy cartridge. In other words, although the device looks entirely like a camera, it remains a fully functional Game Boy on the inside.

Some games, including Tetris and Pokémon, can reportedly be played with one hand using the redesigned controls. However, the speaker has been removed from the current version of the prototype.

Photos Remain at the Classic 128 × 112-Pixel Resolution

Considering the extent of the modifications, it might be tempting to assume that the GBD-M2 also offers a major improvement in image quality. That, however, is not the aim of the project.

The camera still uses a sensor derived from the original Game Boy Camera. As a result, it produces the same 128 × 112-pixel grayscale images as Nintendo’s original accessory.

Rather than increasing the resolution, the GBD-M2 preserves the Game Boy Camera’s unmistakable visual style while making the device itself more practical and enjoyable to use as a dedicated camera.

In that sense, it could be described as a camera that has evolved in the exact opposite direction from today’s high-resolution digital cameras.

DIY Files—and Possibly Kits or Completed Units—May Be Released in the Future

Unfortunately, the GBD-M2 is currently only a prototype, and there are no confirmed plans for mass production.

Graves has, however, stated that the files required to build the device will be released once the project reaches a more complete stage. TechEBlog also reports that limited quantities of DIY kits or fully assembled units could potentially be offered in the future.

The Game Boy Camera has recently inspired a growing number of new modifications, including projects such as the 2BitToy Camera+, which adds interchangeable lens support to the original accessory.

The GBD-M2 takes the concept one step further by rebuilding the Game Boy itself in a form specifically designed for photography. For fans of the Game Boy Camera and its distinctive low-resolution aesthetic, this is certainly a project worth following.

Source <a
